Trochlear palsies caused by isolated trochlear schwannomas.

2010

To describe clinical features and management of 4 patients suffering from unilateral superior oblique palsies due to MRI-documented trochlear nerve schwannomas.Chart reviews of 4 patients seen at the departments of ophthalmogy and neurology at the University of Mainz. All four patients were male, aged 36 to 72 years at initial presentation. None suffered from neurofibromatosis. The history of double vision prior presentation was 9 months to 13 years, follow-up time was 9 to 156 months. Two patients didn't receive any intervention: one remained stable over the follow-up time of 9 months. In patient #2, fourth nerve palsy was diagnosed 13 years prior to confirmation of a trochlear schwannoma b…

LigaSure in total thyroidectomy.

2008

PURPOSE: LigaSure is a bipolar diathermy system, which achieves vessel sealing with reduced thermal spread. The device has been used successfully in abdominal operations and because of its features, it has been applied recently in thyroid surgery to minimize the risk of complications such as laryngeal nerve palsy and hypocalcemia, and also to reduce the operating time. METHODS: Between June and December 2005, we performed total thyroidectomy for various disorders in 105 patients. We used the LigaSure diathermy system in 53 patients and traditional hemostatic procedures in the other 52. We evaluated the demographic features, histopathological diagnosis, operating times, and relevant postoper…

Persistent idiopathic hypoglossal nerve palsy: A motor neuron disease-mimic syndrome?

2014

Unilateral isolated hypoglossal nerve palsy (IHNP) is a condition (1–7) usually symptomatic of a pathology of the skull base (6,8). In rare cases, IHNP remains of unknown aetiology and is classifie...

2008

INTRODUCTION: The aim of our study was to establish a systematization of collateral branches originating from posterior auricular artery to facial nerve in prestylian space. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty posterior auricular arteries were studied on 15 fresh cadavers after selective patent blue injection. We observed subsequent colouration of facial nerve. Number and topography of collateral branches were highlighted. RESULTS: Posterior auricular artery supplied facial nerve in 67%. Collateral branches dedicated to facial nerve could be classified into three types: type 1 corresponded to one artery in prestylian space, type 2 to several branches in prestylian space; finally type 3 featured s…

Third nerve palsy as the sole manifestation of midbrain ischemia

1995

Thirty-seven patients with risk factors for the development of cerebrovascular diseases had sudden onset isolated third nerve palsy and abnormal masseter reflex and/or electro-oculographic findings indicating a causative midbrain lesion. Improvement or recovery of the third nerve palsies was accompanied by improvement or recovery of the abnormal electrophysiologic findings pointing to their functional significance. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 29 of these patients demonstrated corresponding ischemic midbrain lesions in eight, ipsilateral in five patients, bilateral in three. In another three patients with MRI proven midbrain lesions (ipsilateral in two, bilateral in one) electrophysi…
